Background

Aghast by people’s suffering during the Bosnian war, the Emmaus communities in Italy joined forces with those of the Union of Emmaus Friends and Companions (UACE) in France. Later, communities in other European countries joined them and they began sending humanitarian convoys in 1992. In 1993, they stepped up their action: Emmaus International set up an office at the port of Split in Croatia and another in Gradacac in the north of Bosnia. Emmaus focused its provision of aid in the city of Tuzla, whose mayor has always defended the city’s mixed ethnicity. In 1999, a group of Bosnians set up the International Forum of Solidarity in Tuzla, which became a member of Emmaus International in 2003. Following on from its work to help displaced persons during the war, the Forum gives special attention to victims of human trafficking. Twenty years after the end of the war in 1995, the humanitarian convoys continue and personal contacts are also forged as a result.
