Located a few miles from Bedford, Emmaus Village Carlton is a community site where 35 male and female companions live and work. At the site they carry out the traditional activities of Emmaus communities: collecting, sorting through, repairing and selling goods at low prices. There are three different second-hand shops, selling clothes, furniture, electricals, household linen, craft items, children’s toys and clothes, books and bric a brac. Within the Bric a Brac and Book Shop, companions run a café serving meals, drinks and homemade cakes. In 2013, Emmaus Village Carlton opened its Emporium, a second-hand store which specialises in collector’s items. Using some of the income from its activities, the group has helped send containers to Emmaus Iasi in Romania, an organisation with which it now has friendly ties. They also work with other similar organisations within their area to support people in need.
