Emmaus Sheffield opened its second-hand shop in 2007 and welcomed the first companion in 2008, once renovations were completed on the accommodation.
The accommodation is located near Sheffield city centre, in a former cutlery factory called Sipelia Works. The renovations to Sipelia Works entailed redesigning the first floor, so it now complies with a range of environmental requirements. The 14 companions at the community carry out the traditional activities of Emmaus communities of collecting, sorting, repairing and selling goods at low prices. The companions tend a small garden and keep some animals – a cat, 2 pygmy goats and 2 guinea pigs – which are very popular with children who come to the community. Emmaus Sheffield would now like to add a new room so it can welcome 4 more companions.
