Emmaus Africa and Emmaus International are supporting the campaign entitled Tournons la page (Let’s turn the page) regarding democracy in Africa. “Constitutional coup d’Etats” are brewing in several countries, but people – in particular young people – are having none of it. This campaign, initiated by African Civil Society is being launched to show them that they are not alone.
The petition calls on citizens of Europe and Africa, intellectuals, artists, associations, religious figures, trade unions to reject any kind of constitutional manipulation, to protect activists committed to democratic change in Africa and to collectively envisage what the situation would be like post democratic change. Around forty organisations and key figures feature among the signatories, including Emmaus Africa, Emmaus International, Y' en a marre in Senegal, le Balai citoyen in Burkina and Noam Chomsky.
Many people seem to have become accustomed to the fact that democracy in many African countries is just a facade. Not us!
