Speech by Lucie Coutaz for young people - Faims & Soifs des hommes, April-May 1970

On this day dedicated to women, Emmaus International would like to pay homage to Lucie Coutaz, the woman who worked for over 37 years with Abbé Pierre and who did so much for the Emmaus movement. The speech that she wrote for young people in Faims & Soifs des hommes, no. 6-7, April-May 1970, pages 10-11 is one of the few texts that allows us to discover a little more about who she was.

Grupo Aportes de Emmaus Uruguay's training workshops to help women develop their skills and gain self-confidence

For 21 years, Grupo Aportes de Emmaus Uruguay has been running training workshops on the reuse and manufacture of clothing and other items to enable mainly women and teenage girls to develop their skills and help them overcome their social vulnerability. Margarita Mariño and Lucía Puig, members of Grupo Aportes, explain these actions in more detail.

"La planète des pauvres" : the incredible story of Louis Harenger, a companion at Neuilly-sur-Marne who travelled around the world in 1997 to visit the Emmaus communities.

Do you know the story of Louis Harenger? He was a companion at the Neuilly-sur-Marne community who travelled around the world by bicycle to meet all the Emmaus communities and companions around the globe who dedicate their lives to the most disadvantaged. He published his experiences in a book entitled "La planète des pauvres" with a preface by Abbé Pierre.

Speaking of Our Origins #2: Interview with Efraín Olivera Lerena, from Uruguay, on the Emmaus International movement

On 24th May 1969, the first World Assembly of Emmaus groups took place at the Federal Parliament in Bern, Switzerland. This was a founding event for Emmaus International, with the adoption of the Universal Manifesto. Exactly 50 years later, over 180 representatives of Emmaus International from 4 continents met at the same location, including the "veterans" of Emmaus International who have been part of the movement since the very first World Assembly. In our series “Speaking of Our Origins”, we will hear from key figures and custodians of the memory of our movement who, based on their own experiences, tell us about the early days and the development of Emmaus International.

Emmaüs Solidarité Ouaga – A professional training centre to address the lack of education and training in Burkina Faso


To mark the International Day of Education on 24th January, Emmanuel Sciambo, leader of the group Emmaüs Solidarité Ouaga in Burkina Faso, spoke to us about the work his group has been doing over the years to provide an education for vulnerable children who are very often deprived of access to schooling. He explained how the structural adjustment programme followed by the State has led to its withdrawal from its role in supporting education at all levels (primary, secondary and higher), and the disastrous consequences of this, particularly for the most disadvantaged groups in society.
